Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is a long-distance hiking trail that stretches for over 500 kilometers along the rugged coastline of southwestern Turkey. It is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging hiking trails in the world, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, ancient ruins, and traditional villages.

The trail was first established in 1999 by a British expat named Kate Clow, who fell in love with the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. She spent years researching and mapping out the route, which follows ancient footpaths and mule tracks that have been used for centuries by local shepherds and farmers.

The Lycian Way begins in the seaside town of Fethiye and ends in the village of Hisarönü, passing through a variety of landscapes and terrains along the way. Hikers can expect to encounter steep cliffs, rocky beaches, dense forests, and rolling hills, as well as a variety of wildlife such as wild boars, eagles, and tortoises.

One of the highlights of the trail is the numerous ancient ruins and historical sites that hikers can explore along the way. The Lycian people, who inhabited the region over 2000 years ago, left behind a rich legacy of tombs, temples, and other structures that are still visible today. Some of the most notable sites include the ruins of the ancient city of Olympos, the Lycian rock tombs in Myra, and the ancient city of Patara, which was once a major port and trading center.

In addition to its natural and historical attractions, the Lycian Way is also known for its warm hospitality and friendly locals. Hikers can stay in traditional guesthouses and homestays along the route, where they can sample local cuisine and learn about the region’s culture and traditions.

Despite its many attractions, the Lycian Way is not for the faint of heart. The trail is challenging and requires a good level of fitness and experience, as well as proper equipment and preparation. Hikers should be prepared for long days of walking, steep ascents and descents, and unpredictable weather conditions.

However, for those who are up to the challenge, the Lycian Way offers an unforgettable adventure and a chance to experience the beauty and history of one of Turkey’s most stunning regions. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a first-time adventurer, the Lycian Way is a trail that should not be missed.
